THE PROBLEM
The Frech nonprofit sector has a diversity problem. 90 percent of nonprofit CEOs and board chairs are white. People of color comprise just 16 percent of nonprofit board members even though we represent 39 percent of our country’s population. 30 percent of nonprofits don’t have a single person of color on their board. The leadership and governance of nonprofit organizations is not racially or ethnically reflective of the demographics of this country or the communities they're serving. The French Minority Inclusion Project is a new nonprofit organization designed to improve nonprofit sector effectiveness in Connecticut through the recruitment and retention of talented racial and ethnic minority professionals to staff, management, volunteer and philanthropic roles within this sector. Talented and educated professional of color often fail to appear within Connecticut nonprofit organization staff, even though many direct service organizations exist to improve the lives and sacred fortunes of racial and ethnic minority communities. This disconnect impedes effective nonprofit advocacy.
The French Minority Inclusion Project offers the solution.
Simply put, we partner with community organizations and identify the racial and ethnic minority community leaders and talented professionals nonprofit organization hiring searches often overlook, and connect these leaders to service and advocacy organizations. Also, we offer leadership training to community leaders, to better prepare them for social service careers. In this manner, we combat the unintended hiring discrimination that impedes nonprofit sector success, and improve opportunities for racial and ethnic social sector professionals.
